Politicians slapped and booted in public


A shoe was hurled at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by a man while he was addressing an election rally near the Uttarakhand state capital,Dehradun. The shoe fell some distance from Gandhi who continued with his speech. The man, identified as Kuldip, was immediately taken into custody by the police.

A shoe was hurled at Team Anna members at a public rally in Dehradun as they kickstarted their campaign for the five election-bound states. Team Anna members Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodiya were present on the stage, when the slipper was thrown.

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar was slapped by a youth, the same person who had attacked former telecommunications minister Sukh Ram. Pawar was attacked at the NDMC Centre in Delhi.

Former telecom minister Sukh Ram was attacked by a man in the Rohini courts complex here after his sentencing in a 1996 telecom scam case. Harvinder Singh slapped and kicked Ram just as he came out of the court. He was detained by police and taken to Prashant Vihar police station. The octogenarian former union minister was unhurt in the attack.

Throwing a shoe on famous personalities has become a common gesture of protest. The latest to be targeted was Arvind Kejriwal, a close associate of Anna Hazare.

A chappal was hurled at former Karnataka chief minister Yeddyurappa at a election rally in Hassan district in April 2009.

A former lawyer from Madhya Pradesh, Manoj Sharma, flung a slipper at the former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi inside the Patiala House court premises.
